Is Sterling Silver Good for a Moissanite Ring? Hardness, Tarnish and Care

Yes, with one trade-off. Moissanite is 9¼ on the Mohs scale; silver is far softer, so the metal, not the stone, shows the wear. GIA says sterling is softer than gold and platinum and tarnishes in air and moisture. It suits a ring you wear often and care for. For one ring worn daily for decades, we would choose gold or platinum.

Is sterling silver hard enough for a moissanite ring?

The stone is not the weak point. GIA's 1997 study of synthetic moissanite puts it at 9¼ on the Mohs scale. Silver sits at 2.5 to 3.

Sterling is silver alloyed with other metals for strength, and GIA is still plain that it is “softer compared to gold and platinum, making it more prone to scratches and dents.” An older GIA guide adds that silver “is soft, can scratch, and takes on an aged appearance.”

On your hand, that means the band is the part that picks up fine scratches over the years. The stone, at 9¼, is the part least likely to.

How does sterling silver compare with gold and platinum?

The stone is the same in every case. The metal sets most of the upkeep and the price gap. This condenses what GIA says about each metal in its guide to ring metals for everyday wear. GIA’s own summary table still rates sterling silver “Yes” for everyday wear, with upkeep that “may need polishing to remove tarnish if not worn often.”

Read the table as a trade, not a ranking. Sterling costs less and asks for more care in return. A retailer that sells gold says the same: Brilliant Earth's guide calls sterling “naturally softer and more prone to scratches” and says white gold is “particularly suitable” for engagement rings and other frequently worn pieces.

What do 925 and platinum-plated mean?

925 is the fineness mark for sterling silver: 925 parts per thousand pure silver, or 92.5%. The U.S. Geological Survey describes sterling as 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper or other alloys. The FTC's Jewelry Guides list the word sterling among descriptions that may be misleading unless a product is at least 925/1,000ths pure silver.

Platinum-plated means a layer of platinum over another metal. The same guides list the word platinum, unqualified, as a description that may be misleading for a coated product, so a coated piece should say it is coated. Ours does: every ring we sell is 925 sterling silver, platinum-plated, as our supplier specifies it. It is not platinum throughout, and it is never gold or vermeil.

What we cannot tell you is how thick that layer is or how long it lasts. Our supplier does not publish a plating thickness, so we state no lifespan. A plating is a surface layer, and surface layers wear: GIA notes that even the plated finish on white gold wears away over time and may need occasional re-plating.

Does sterling silver tarnish?

Yes. Silver reacts with sulfur-containing gases in the air and builds a surface layer of silver sulfide, which is the dark film called tarnish. The Canadian Conservation Institute describes it in those terms for museum silver. GIA says the same of jewelry: silver tarnishes in air and moisture, and a polishing cloth removes it.

Our materials page says sterling tarnishes and polishes back, and our refund policy says a soft polishing cloth restores it and that normal tarnish is not a defect. We make no promise that the plating prevents tarnish. Treat a platinum-plated sterling ring as sterling.

Does sterling silver turn your finger green?

It can. Sterling is 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper. A dermatologist at Nebraska Medicine says green marks from jewelry are usually copper reacting with sweat, lotion or other products, and that the residue is not harmful and washes off with soap and water. Because sterling contains copper, the same thing is possible with a sterling ring.

When is sterling silver the wrong choice?

Choose something else if any of these is true.

• You want one ring for every day, for decades, with little upkeep. GIA says platinum “needs less maintenance than other metals,” and that 14k and 18k gold are “ideal for rings worn daily.”
• Your hands do hard work. GIA says silver “may not be ideal for very active lifestyles.”
• You dislike polishing. GIA: “Regular cleaning and polishing can remove tarnish and restore shine.”
• A metal sensitivity decides the purchase. GIA’s table rates sterling silver “Possibly” for allergy. We do not publish a nickel content, so we cannot tell you a ring is nickel-free. Write to us before you order.

Which sterling silver moissanite rings do we sell?

Every ring we sell is lab-created moissanite in 925 sterling silver, platinum-plated. How do you care for a sterling silver moissanite ring?

1. Keep it out of pools, hot tubs and the ocean. Blue Nile's guide warns that chlorine can lead to “blackening or even permanent surface pitting,” and that salt water accelerates tarnishing.
2. Store it dry and enclosed. The Canadian Conservation Institute, writing for museum collections, advises a sealed, airtight bag or other enclosure for silver that needs extra protection, with a material that removes sulfur-containing gases, such as a tarnish-preventing fabric.
3. Polish with a soft cloth when it dulls, not on a schedule. The same institute advises avoiding frequent polishing: tarnish that keeps returning means the silver needs a more enhanced level of protection. (Our care page says an occasional polishing cloth is enough.)
