Moissanite is a lab-created gemstone made of silicon carbide — a real mineral in its own right, not a diamond and not pretending to be one. Three things define it: exceptional fire (a dispersion of 0.104, more than double a diamond's 0.044), near-diamond hardness (9.25 on the Mohs scale), and an origin story that begins inside a meteor crater. If you are deciding whether moissanite belongs on your hand, here is what the stone actually is — plainly, with the numbers.

Where does moissanite come from?

Moissanite was first identified in 1893 by Henri Moissan, the French chemist who would later win the Nobel Prize, while he was examining rock samples from the Canyon Diablo meteor crater in Arizona. He found minute, brilliantly hard crystals he initially took for diamond. They turned out to be something else entirely: naturally occurring silicon carbide. The mineral was later named moissanite in his honour.

Natural moissanite is extraordinarily rare — crystals large enough to cut for jewellery essentially do not occur on Earth. Every moissanite you will ever see in a ring or a pair of studs was grown in a laboratory as single-crystal silicon carbide. That is not a lesser status; it is the only way the stone exists at wearable size. It also means growers can produce stones to consistent standards, which is why colourless (D–F range) material with VVS1 clarity is the norm rather than the exception.

Why does moissanite have so much fire?

Fire — the property gemologists call dispersion — is a stone's ability to split white light into flashes of spectral colour. Moissanite's dispersion measures 0.104, versus 0.044 for diamond. Its refractive index of 2.65–2.69 is also higher than diamond's, which is why a well-cut moissanite returns so much light.

Here is the honest part: that extra fire is a matter of taste, not an unqualified virtue. In direct sunlight, especially in larger stones, moissanite throws pronounced rainbow flashes that some people love and others find too much — the effect critics call the "disco ball." If you want a stone that reads closer to a diamond's whiter light, choose a smaller carat weight or a step cut such as an emerald cut, which trades sparkle-count for long, calm flashes. If you want maximum fire, moissanite delivers more of it than any diamond can.

How hard is moissanite — and will it last?

Moissanite measures 9.25 on the Mohs hardness scale. Among gemstones commonly worn, only diamond (10) is harder; sapphire and ruby sit at 9. In practice this means moissanite is hard enough for everyday wear, including on an engagement or promise ring that never comes off.

It also does not cloud, yellow, or lose its brilliance over time. Moissanite is a solid crystal through and through — not a coated or composite simulant — so there is no film to wear away. When a moissanite looks dull, the cause is almost always surface residue: soap, lotion, skin oils. Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap, and a soft brush restore it.

How is moissanite graded?

Most jewellery-grade moissanite is graded on the familiar diamond colour scale, with D–F (colourless) material standard, and clarity is typically VVS1 — very, very slightly included — because the growth process is controlled.

One thing worth knowing before you shop: GIA, the laboratory whose reports anchor the diamond trade, does not issue grading reports for moissanite. The certificates that ship with moissanite — often from "GRA" — are best treated as a specification sheet from the producer, not independent certification on par with a GIA report. A trustworthy seller will state the stone's colour, clarity, cut, and measurements plainly and stand behind them; the paper alone proves little.

The honest tradeoffs

Moissanite is a genuinely good stone, and it is easier to trust a recommendation that admits its limits. So, the limits:

  • It is not a diamond. Silicon carbide and carbon are different materials with different optics. Moissanite deserves to be chosen as itself, not passed off as something else.
  • It has no meaningful resale market. Buy it to wear, not as a store of value. The consolation is that it costs a small fraction of a comparable diamond, so far less is at stake.
  • It can pass a thermal diamond tester. Moissanite conducts heat much as diamond does, so basic pen testers often read it as diamond. That is a quirk of physics, not an identity — electrical testers and any gemologist can tell the two apart.
  • Lab-grown does not mean impact-free. Growing silicon carbide crystal is energy-intensive. The honest claim is "no mining," not "no footprint."

The short version

Moissanite is lab-created silicon carbide: born in a meteor crater in 1893, grown in laboratories ever since, harder than any gem but diamond at 9.25 Mohs, and carrying more than twice a diamond's fire at 0.104 dispersion. It will not fund your retirement and it will not fool a gemologist — but as a stone to actually wear, it earns its place on merit.
