Watch the fire: moissanite throws more than twice the colour
Dispersion — jewelers call it fire — is a stone’s ability to split white light into flashes of spectral colour. Moissanite’s dispersion is 0.104. Diamond’s is 0.044. In plain terms, moissanite throws more than double the rainbow. Bring the stone near a window or under a single bright lamp and rock it slowly. If the flashes are predominantly coloured — reds, greens, violets in constant play — you are very likely looking at moissanite. Diamond sparkles mostly white, with colour as the accent rather than the theme.
Be honest with yourself about the limits here. Cut quality and lighting change how much fire any stone shows, and small stones are harder to read than large ones. Treat this as a strong first impression, not a verdict.
The loupe test: look for doubled facet edges
The most reliable at-home test costs about ten dollars: a 10x jeweler’s loupe. Moissanite is doubly refractive — light entering the stone splits into two rays — while diamond is singly refractive. The practical result is that when you look through moissanite’s crown at an angle, the facet junctions at the back of the stone appear subtly doubled, like fine ghosting on a photograph. Diamond’s facet edges stay crisp and single from every direction.
To run the test, hold the stone under good light and look through a slanted crown facet — not straight down through the table — and focus on the lines where the back facets meet. Tilt and rotate as you look. Cutters usually orient moissanite so the doubling is least visible face-up, which is exactly why you view it off-axis. If you find doubled lines, you have your answer: it is moissanite. If you cannot find any after patient tilting, diamond becomes much more likely, though an untrained eye can miss faint doubling on a small stone.
Does moissanite pass a diamond tester?
Yes — and this is the part that misleads people. The common pen-style testers sold online measure thermal conductivity, and moissanite conducts heat in the same range as diamond, so a standard thermal tester will confidently read moissanite as “diamond.” A pass on one of these devices proves almost nothing. Distinguishing the two by instrument requires an electrical-conductivity test — the “moissanite testers” and combination multi-testers jewelers use. If someone offers a thermal-tester pass as proof of diamond, that is a reason for more scepticism, not less.
The popular tests that do not work
- The fog test. The theory is that diamond disperses breath-fog instantly because it conducts heat well. So does moissanite. Both clear fast; the test cannot separate them.
- The water test. Both stones sink. Floating would only expose a very light imitation, not moissanite.
- The scratch test. Moissanite sits at 9.25 on the Mohs scale — harder than sapphire, second only to diamond among stones you will commonly meet. It scratches glass just as effortlessly as diamond does, and you risk damaging the setting for a result that tells you nothing.
- The newspaper test. Reading print through a stone can expose cubic zirconia, but a well-cut moissanite handles light much the way a diamond does. Not conclusive.
When to hand it to a professional
If real money or real sentiment rides on the answer, stop testing at the kitchen table. A jeweler with a multi-tester can settle the question in seconds, and a gemologist can confirm it by measuring refractive index — moissanite’s sits at 2.65–2.69, above diamond’s. Paperwork deserves the same scrutiny as the stone: GIA does not issue grading reports for moissanite, so a certificate bearing an unfamiliar acronym is not the equivalent of a diamond report. The simplest protection of all is a seller who states in writing exactly what the stone is.
The honest bottom line
Nothing above makes moissanite a lesser stone caught impersonating. It is typically graded D–F in colour and VVS1 in clarity, wears at 9.25 hardness for a lifetime of daily use, and throws visibly more fire than diamond — at a fraction of the price. The only wrong in this story is a seller calling it a diamond. Sold as what it is, moissanite needs no disguise.
